A Visit to New Mexico’s Largest Winery

D.H. Lescombes Winery is New Mexico’s largest winery. It was by far the largest winery Michael and I have ever been to, and they had a gigantic parking lot to match. We had plenty of space to choose from while parking our camper in the back corner of the lot. We arrived after a long weekend of indulging in alcoholic beverages in San Elizario, so I was feeling a little rough. Michael tried a few of their reds while my body craved water and food. They have a limited menu with reasonably priced items. We tried their Pasta New Mexico and Southwest Meatloaf. It tasted a bit like freezer meals, but it was better with some added salt. We ended up meeting a fellow traveler who was headed in the direction we had just come from. Afterward, we headed back to the camper for some much-needed rest.

Overall, we had a pleasant experience here, but the winery felt a little too commercialized for our taste, and the wine was a bit pricey. It would be nice to check this place out in the warmer months to enjoy their outside seating.

About The Winery

D.H. Lescombes Winery is run by sixth-generation French winemakers whose family lineage spans three continents. In 1981, they made their first plantings in New Mexico. Later, in 1984, their first vintage was bottled. They have a 220-acre vineyard located 47 miles west of Deming, New Mexico, at 4,500 feet. This elevation provides warm days and cool nights where there is often a difference between day and night temperatures of 30 degrees or more. This climate makes it possible to grow some of the best grapes in New Mexico. The vineyard produces 7-10 tons of grapes per acre on average. They grow Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Moscato, Pinot Grigio, Merlot, Chenin Blanc, and dozens of other varietals.

They have winery tours available from 1 pm to 3 pm every Sunday, which includes a Guided Winery Tour and a Wine Flight. They also have live music on Fridays in the spring and summer.
