Where the West Begins

Michael and I were in the mood to experience a little city life, so we decided to spend St. Paddy’s Day weekend near Fort Worth, Texas. We booked a spot in Azle, Texas, and were mesmerized by all of the greenery and trees as we drove through the countryside. It was beautiful and only a 30-minute drive to downtown Fort Worth. It was a rainy couple of days, but we still managed to check out a park, try a few restaurants, and stroll around a new city, and have a movie marathon.

About Azle

Azle is situated approximately 16 miles northwest of downtown Fort Worth, making it a part of the broader DFW Metroplex. Azle developed primarily as a farming and ranching community, nestled near Eagle Mountain Lake. With a population of around 13,000 residents, the city is known for its relatively affordable cost of living compared to larger cities in the region.

About Fort Worth

Fort Worth is located in North Central Texas and is the fifth-largest city in the state. With over 900,000 residents, it’s the 13th-largest city in the United States. It was established in 1849 as an Army outpost and later became a significant trading post for cowboys and earned the nickname "Cowtown." The city's heritage is deeply rooted in the cattle industry, which is celebrated today in its many Western-themed attractions and events.

Boondockers Welcome // Friends in RV Spaces

It’s no wonder Sam and Sarah are “Hall of Fame” hosts with Boondockers Welcome. They have a beautiful homestead with space to host multiple travelers and have built a wonderful cabin for their guests. It has a bathroom, laundry room, and fridge, with homemade treats available. They also have electric, water, and dump amenities for a small donation. We would gladly stay here again.

Food & Drink

Rodeo Goat // We love a crazy menu, and Rodeo Goat has some of the wildest burger concoctions we’ve seen. We tried the Mustang Sally and Billy F Gibbons. Incredible. We also got to try their sweet Goat Balls for free since we were first-timers. Everything was absolutely delicious.

Velvet Taco // While the tacos were good, it’s hard to justify spending over $5 for a single taco 🫣 Their St. Patty’s special, Shepherd’s Pie was really good. We Probably wouldn’t go back, though.

Lottie’s // We had to get at least one green beer for St. Paddy’s Day. Lottie’s has a nice outdoor seating area where we got to enjoy the sunshine.

Aunt Deb’s // A vendor was setting up food at Lottie’s as we were getting ready to leave. It turns out it was queso birria quesadillas, so we had to stick around to take some to go. They were pretty tasty!

Things To Do

Airfield Falls Conservation Park // The park sits on the east side of the Naval Air Station JRB and features parts from a McDonnell Douglas C-9 aircraft. It also has Tarrant County’s largest natural waterfall.

The Bledsoe // The Bledsoe is a 37,384 square foot entertainment-focused center situated in the heart of the dynamic West 7th District of Fort Worth, Texas. It’s where we discovered Rodeo Goat and Lottie’s. This area gives off a very cool vibe. We’d love to come back here and stay within Uber or walking distance.

Murals

I’m a sucker for cities and businesses that embrace the arts and fill their walls with murals. Fort Worth, had some really fun ones!
