Boondockers Welcome
We have officially taken off on our second winter travel excursion! One thing we’re utilizing more this trip is our Boondockers Welcome membership. This is an app where locals invite RVers to park on their property, share their stories, and get a good night’s rest for free! It’s a perfect way to break up long drives without having to pay any campground fees. Some hosts offer electric hookups and other amenities for a small donation.
Crystal Mountain was our first-ever boondockers welcome stop, and it was lovely. It was a little sketchy getting back there with the stone hills, but we made it okay in 4-wheel drive. It was a very pretty open area with some rolling hills, a couple of bee hives, a tiny library, and a goat! Our host, Maynard was a gracious host and met us at the end of the driveway to lead us to our destination. Michael chatted with him for a bit and he gave us a book he wrote about what it is to grow old.
We had a low-key night. Michael cooked up some honey chicken thighs and we watched the movie Paddington.
Tip:
If you have a large rig, don’t even attempt this stop. Our 25 ft travel trailer was about as large as we’d feel comfortable getting up the driveway hills.
